My "Ultimate Karaoke Family" on ABC's Wife Swap!

We finally got our air-date!

Last year, as some of you may recall, I was contacted via OnlinePopstar.com by ABC to appear on their hit reality show, Wife Swap, with my family, as THE ULTIMATE KARAOKE FAMILY.

My three kids were dying to do the show! Me, not so much.
Their excitement won us over, and away I went!
I left mid-February, 2007, for the mile-high region of Loveland, Colorado, to immerse myself in the world of mixed martial arts (MMA).

Performing all forms of martial arts for four hours per day made me truly appreciate what the NFL teams go through when they play in Denver!

It was a helluva experience, a real eye-opener, to be sure, for someone like me who'd never watched Wife Swap before!

I had a blast with the ABC film crew, and made some great friends there and with RDF Media, the production company for Wife Swap. I did NOT make friends with the other family, though... heh heh...

There were amazing differences in our styles of parenting, as you'll see if you watch the show.

So, now we have an air-date: Wednesday, March 12 at 8:00 p.m. (EST) on ABC.

Please feel free to
pm me with any questions or comments you have on the show; I'm happy to answer any and all!

Below is a copy of the ABC press release and a link to it:

A DISCIPLINED CHAMPION KICKBOXER MOM STEPS OUT OF THE RING TO SWAP LIVES WITH A CAREFREE KARAOKE-LOVING MOM, ON ABC'S "WIFE SWAP"

This week in "Martinez/Figaratto," an extreme fighter mom who runs a martial arts studio with her black belt husband swaps lives with a soft-hearted stay-at-home mom whose life is devoted to her kids and karaoke, on "Wife Swap," WEDNESDAY, MARCH 12 (8:00-9:00 p.m., ET) on ABC.

Each week from across the country, two families with very different values are chosen to take part in a two-week long challenge. The wives from these two families exchange husbands, children and lives (but not bedrooms) to discover just what it's like to live another woman's life. It's a mind-blowing experiment that often ends up changing their lives forever.

Kate Martinez (26), her husband, Adam (35), and stepson Alex (10) live to fight, and teaching over 150 students at their Colorado family-run martial arts studio is their passion and livelihood. Kate and Adam insist that the most important thing they instill in their students, and in Alex, is self-discipline. Kate and Adam are teaching Alex that nothing in life comes easy -- not even parental affection. Alex is a self reliant boy who makes his own dinner, can put himself to bed and does chores in the family home and at the family's martial arts studio. He has to be independent, as Kate lavishes most of her affection on her beloved pet cockatoo, Maki.

Kate travels to Maine to the home of the fun-loving Figaratto family, where wife Roxie (36), husband Ron (39) and children Megan (17), Katie (13) and Christian (9) sing karaoke seven nights a week. The Figarattos throw karaoke parties in their basement, which they have dubbed the "R&R karaoke bar." Roxie even runs an internet karaoke business from the basement, but as soon as the kids get home, she turns her undivided attention to them. In the Figaratto home, the kids are center-stage, and as a result they sometimes behave like spoiled rock stars -- Christian won't brush his teeth, comb his hair or take a bite of food without supervision. At dinnertime, Roxie visits several different fast food restaurants to get each member of the family whatever strikes their fancy.

In the first week of the swap, Kate must cater to the pampered Figarattos' every whim, doing the kids' chores herself and driving all around town to fetch food for the family of finicky eaters. Later, Kate finds stage fright to be a worthy opponent when it's time for her to step up to the mike at one of the Figarattos' karaoke parties. In Colorado, peace-loving Roxie has a tough time kick-boxing, but she has even more trouble ordering Alex around like an employee.

In the second week of the swap, when the wives change the rules and turn the tables, Kate bans karaoke and trains the Figarattos in martial arts to teach them some much-needed discipline. She also puts her foot down with the coddled kids, enforcing chores and making immature Christian take care of himself. Meanwhile, Roxie throws a karaoke party to loosen up the ultra-serious Martinezes, and rules that Adam must close the martial arts studio to spend more time with Alex.

At the end of the swap, when the families are reunited, will Roxie change her tune and add discipline to her family's life? Will Kate put her stepson before her martial arts studio, or at least before her cockatoo?

"Wife Swap" is an RDF USA production. It was created by Stephen Lambert and is executive-produced by Stef Wagstaffe and Stephen Lambert of RDF Media ("Faking It" and "Junkyard Wars") and Michael Davies of Embassy Row ("Who Wants to be a Millionaire"). This episode was executive-produced by Wendy Roth with Cristin Cricco, Stephanie Schwam-Adams and Mike Gamson as the co-executive producers.

BobbyD's Debut CD Is Released!

Click the album cover to preview the album tracks and read the reviews!

BobbyD kicked off 2008 with the realization of a long-held dream: the release of his first CD, self-titled Robert Christopher Hymns - Then & Now.

The thirteen track CD is a collection of timeless hymns soulfully re-orchestrated and magnificently sung by Robert Christopher, aka BobbyD.

Complementing and intermingling with the mix of old and new spiritual music are three brand-new originals that are sure to become instant favorites! The entire track list creates for the listener a dynamic, heartwrenching, and inspirational musical voyage that will lift you up, put a smile on your face, and gratitude in your heart.

Hymns - Then & Now is available for purchase at CD Baby. You can purchase the CD online and have it delivered to you at home, or you can purchase a digital download of the album to keep on your computer.

We interviewed Bobby in relation to the release of his much-awaited first CD and discovered more about him and what inspired him to write and record this collection of spiritual music.

Read the interview below:

OP: Congratulations on the release of your first CD! Please tell us the reason for the CD Title: Robert Christopher: Hymns - Then & Now. How long did production take, and who else was involved?

BD: Thank you. My full name is Robert Dennis Christopher Donahue, so I felt the name Christopher had a better ring. Then & Now was agreed on because of the Older songs as well as some of the newer written songs. The entire production took four months.

OP: What was the motivation behind the decision to record your own CD?
BD: It was always a dream of mine to sing with a full Orchestra, this didn't seem to be practical. Don't get me wrong...the Dream is still alive - however, for now recording this CD seemed to be a great alternative. For now anyway.

OP: Three of the songs on the CD, "Lord Hallelujah," "My Savior" and the heart-wrenching ballad "Blessed Are The Children," are originals. Could you give us some info on when the songs were written, and what inspired you
BD: "Lord Hallelujah" Was co-written by Guy Segrove and Eddie Henderson motivated by Eddie's story of one day meeting this homeless man who would constantly repeat the phrase, "Lord Hallelujah. I thank you Jesus". Even in this homeless person's situation, he could still muster up gratitude for his existence. Bass accompanment is provided in this number by Guy's Pastor, Dan Brindley.

"My Savior" was co-written by my Niece, Grace Ann, her husband, Guy Segrove and myself during one of our sessions. I should point out Guy owns his own studio in Jackson, NJ. All the arrangements on this CD were his and all the instruments you hear aside of the drums were Guy's playing. Guy is a very talented musician. Guy plays the organ for his Church each Sunday as well as entertaining with his talented wife, Grace, at weddings and related functions.

"Blessed Are The Children" I wrote to draw attention to child abuse that takes place world wide. The lyrics are based on personal experience, my own upbringing, and I sing the song from (me) the child's point of view. In many ways it has affected my life and I can't do anything about that other than to make sure it didn't repeat itself in my Family. I can only hope the song brings to light an awareness in some families where this may take place, that they may give some sincere thoughts to what lifetime injury they're inflicting on the child and seek help to change their behavior.

OP: When did you realize that you were a singer? What kinds of music did you enjoy as a youngster?
BD: I guess I always realized I was a singer. People would comment on it every time I sang and it took me a long time to believe I was as good as people said I was. As a young guy I on occassion would sing on the corner with three other guys and when the harmony was there, I would get chills up my spine. Nothing can ever come close to it. So I know you guessed by now my era was the 50's and 60's.

OP: What other bands/artists have been an influence on your singing and music?
BD: Too many to name, however, I guess it started with artists such as Eddie Fischer, Al Martino... so as to cut to the chase..... a lot of Italian singers. Then came The Platters and many groups of the 50's. I was an avid follower of Neil Diamond, John Denver, The Who, Doobie Brothers and the list goes on and on. I also like a great deal of New Age Music such as Enya, Tim Janis, George Winston etc. I also enjoy FFH- "Where You Are" and Mercy Me- "Word Of God Speak."

OP: Tell us about your first performance in front of a live audience.
BD: My first performance on stage was when I was 14, my Father had me get up and sing "Silent Night" for a Christmas Party held at the Maplewood Country Club (were I first started to caddy.) Half way through the song, I forgot the words and felt very embarrassed and the audience sensed this and began to sing along with me ...to my relief.

OP: When did you first sing online? Where was that, and what was your reaction to online singing?
BD: My first experience singing online was KSolo, around two and a half years ago and moved on to BIX, SingSnap and OnlinePopstar. I immediately fell in love with these three mediums for their friendship and competitive spirit (contests).

OP: Tell us how you think the internet can change the path and scope of a singer's career.
BD: I learned a long time ago that the Vocal Chords are a muscle and if you don't exercise them, you lose the quality. Singing on the internet provides that exercise as well as picking up tips from other folks performing. There is also that once-in-a-lifetime possibility of being discovered and at my age that's not really a reality, but for others it sure is. There is so much talent out there and because of the Internet this talent is being tapped. If you need some help with your singing there are some sites that can provide great tips on Singing Techniques such as.......
http://www.vocalist.org/

OP: Very cool! Don't forget about VoiceWorks at OP, too!
We know you love to sing. What are some of your other hobbies?
BD: My hobbies are oil painting, mediums such as pencils, pastel chalk, occasional song writing, piano, guitar and bass guitar, accordion, harmonica and spoons. At one time, computers were my hobbies and now they are a necessity. Outdoors, I like golf and metal detecting, on occasions. Finding old silver coins intrigue me; these I save. Others such as copper clad I donate to an Org. that trains puppies to be seein eye dogs. The Org. is known as Pennies For Puppies.

OP: Wow, you're musical, and certainly seem busy! Please tell us about your family, and how they feel about your new venture. Are there any other singers/musicians in the family?
BD: My family is glad I pursue my passion and kind of proud of what I do and my son, who is an excellent drummer, calls me Mr. Karaoke.

OP: Give us the dirt! What's your worst habit and/or flaw?
BD: Only my wife can tell you, I don't like to admit to any flaws and this could be my only flaw!

OP: What CD are you listening to right now in your home or car CD player?
BD: I'll always listen to tunes such as quoted above if I'm not on the internet listening.

OP: Can we expect another release from you in the future? Are you working toward that now?
BD: I have a few half done numbers and not contemplating a new CD at this time. But, who knows what may develop? If I sense a demand, I will pursue it with more vigor!

OP: Thanks so much for spending time with us tonight, Bobby!

BD: You're very welcome!

9/11 - A Day Of Good Deeds!

A lot of us don't know what to do on 9/11.

It's a sad day, and it envelopes us in a dark, ominous mood, full of despair and fear. For, what really has changed or been done to restore our sense of security and safety?

The truth is, nothing CAN be done to undo the horror of 9/11. Truly, not even swift justice against the perpetrators would have erased those images, or made any of it "right." We learned the ultimate lessons of vulnerability and cruelty.

With time, the wound will heal, but we're left with a permanent scar that will never go away; a scar that permeates our DNA and will be passed as a vague uneasiness to our children and theirs.

Because our human spirit rails against such atrocity, we must find a way to persevere, to rise up again. In times of trouble and crisis, our human spirits shine and reveal themselves to others and ourselves as more powerful and loving than we ever could have imagined. Sometimes it takes a crisis to learn who we really are.

In the wake of the 9/11 tragedy, we did indeed rise up and bond as a collective whole, in a powerful force of unity and compassion. More than bombs, guns, and war, this force TRULY made an impact on our lives, it "righted" a lot of wrongs.

As humans, our unity made us stronger and gave us a purpose and something to cling to; in the face of cruel inhumanity, we clung to our own humanity and leaned on eachother for hope and support.

We needed eachother then, and we need eachother now.

Today, in remembrance of 9/11, I ask you to join me at My Good Deed (http://mygooddeed.org/) and participate as a way to honor the victims and heroes of 9/11 and preserve the spirit of unity and compassion that existed in the nation following the terrorist attacks.

You will join people and organizations everywhere who are pledging to keep the 9/11 spirit of unity alive by performing good deeds on 9/11 and every day throughout the year.

By standing up and celebrating your humanity in this way, you will TRULY fight against terrorism and those who hope to destroy us. This is a wonderful opportunity to remember, reclaim life, and to heal.

OnlinePopstar's Youngest Member In The News!

Here is an exciting news feature from The Gazette, of Orting, WA about Jessica-J, OnlinePopstar's youngest member and an up-and-coming country superstar:

The story, as printed, follows:

GRAHAM - In recent years, American Idol and other talent hunting contests have garnered much attention eclipsing the smaller talent searches that still take place at local fairs around the country.

One such contest is the Colgate Country Showdown, which recently took place at the Mason County Fair July 28.

This country talent search takes small town talent and makes big dreams come true. The lure of cash prizes and a lofty title at stake, this contest is a serious deal in the world of Country music.

Country music is often thought of as a southern affair, but as 13-year old Jessica Jocoy is proving, even up north we have a little country in our hearts. She is currently an eighth-grader at Glacier Middle School in Buckley and recently participated in Colgate Country Showdown at the Mason County Fair. At the contest she beat out 11 other girls to obtain the title of runner up. It was Jocoy's first time entering a contest of this magnitude, but she said that even though it was her first time in such a contest she didn't let her nerves get to her. She said that even though the contest was difficult, her fellow "competitors were kind and friendly."

Darrell Jocoy, Jessica's father, thinks that for his daughter being the "youngest and shortest performer at this competition" she did exceptionally well.

They both agreed that even though the contests are fun they are still highly competitive; he believes that his daughter has a long way to go in her musical career and with a little more musical training and stage experience she will have no problems in the future obtaining the top prize.

Her runner-up status has by no means halted her young dreams of country music success as she continues to push forward by making new songs and learning more about the extensive field of music. She is currently working on various songs for her future album and her natural soothing voice has a wide range that lends itself to many other genres besides country.

Her natural talents have already begun to earn her a loyal fan base; she eagerly recalled a practice performance in Roy at the Grand Little Opry where an older woman came up to her after the show and politely said she came just to hear her sing.

Flattering comments such as these keep Jessica Jocoy actively pursuing her dreams of Country music success.

Currently she can be heard on online at www.onlinepopstar.com/community/Jessica-j, a website for young musicians to upload their musical tracks for fans and interested talent agents to listen to.

Onlinepopstar.com site functions similar to popular networking sites like Myspace, except its focus is centered on music and allowing young budding music artists to share their unique vocal sounds with the world.

Her future aspirations include completing an album and one day performing on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry similar to her favorite performer Martina McBride, a country singer whose powerful soothing voice is inspiration to the young artist.

She understands that competitions like these are hard and difficult, but says the best advice she has on dealing with nervousness and the pressure of contests of this magnitude is "to stay humble, don't be overconfident, and remember to keep coming back."

With these wise and inspiring words it's a safe bet that we haven't heard the last of Jessica Jocoy.

So country music fans keep your ears peeled for this budding country sensation in Graham.

Information?! Gimme a frickin break!

They need to change the name of the "service" that we reach when we dial 411.

Currently, it is globally accepted to call this so-called service "Information." I would like to advance my position that the name of this service be officially changed to "Crap Shoot."

Typical dialing event:

Me: (Full of fear and loathing, tinged by a miniscule shred of hope) dialing: 4. 1. 1.
"Automated THEM:" City and State, please.

Me: New York, New York.

"THEM:" I'm sorry. Please state the City and State again.

Me: New York, New York.

"THEM:" City please.

Me: New York

"THEM:" What State?

Me: New York. New York CITY, State of New York. USA. North America.

"THEM:" (snidely, as I've taken too much of their time, already) Listing, please.

Me: Somesuch Media Company

"THEM:" Palmstuck Media Company? One moment please...

Me: No! No, Somesuch! S as in Sam.

"THEM:" Thank you. One moment please... We have no Somesuch Media Company. Have a nice d--

Me: No! Wait! Please search again. The address is 12345 Fifth Avenue, New York City, NY.

"THEM:" (exaggerated sigh) One moment please... I have Somesuch Drycleaners And Pawn on Fifth Avenue. Have a nice d--

Me: No! Wait! That's not the number I need. It is a Media Company! They've been in business for 27 years, at the same address. I've called them before, I've gotten the number from information before! YOU HAVE THE NUMBER!

"THEM:" Look, ma'am I have the computer right in front of me and do not have your listing...

Me: S. O. M. E. S. U. C. H.

"THEM:" Hold for your number. click.

"Automated THEM:" The number you requested (remember this statement, readers!) is: 123-555-4567.

Me: Like an insipid dolt, I fall for it, again. I dial the number. 123-555-4567.

Ring. Ring. Ring.

Oblivious Stranger: Westwood Ridge Yo-Yo Academy. May I help you?

Me: I'm sorry, I've been given the wrong number.

Suspicious Oblivious Stranger: Do you have a child enrolled here? How did you get this number?

Me: Information gave me your number. It's not the right number, sorry.

Officious Oblivious Stranger: Well! What number did you dial?

Me: 123-555-4567

Indignant Oblivious Stranger: Well! That is indeed our number, ma'am. Who were you trying to call?

Me: Nobody you know.

Offended Oblivious Stranger: Please don't call this number again if you have no business with us.

Me: Sorry. I'll try like hell not to call you again.

Outraged Oblivious Stranger: CLICK.

Is it just me?! Am I the only one?! Is there some governmental initiative afloat to keep just me in a perpetual state of confusion and ignorance? Perhaps the work I do is counterintuitive to some secret agency directive to blight out the mixed bag of karaoke, website administration, writing and television production. Yes! That must be it! Operation KWAWT STOP.

Years back, in the throes of youthful naivete, I did attempt to call "Information" back and get the correct number. Once or twice, I even suggested that the phone company return the .35 cents that I'd been charged for the erroneous information given. Ho HO! The folly of youth!

To expose this side of an already dark story, I'd have to slap an NC-17 rating on my blog, so it will remain untold. Suffice to say, I don't sleep well at night.

It is probably a modest approximation, but I assert that the 411 Information Service (oxymorons, all) has cost me 233 productive hours and close to $3,000 in fees.

Yes, the name must be changed from 411 Information Sevice to 411 Crap Shoot Disservice to accurately reflect the average consumer experience.

It is my personal agenda to advance this campaign. I will fight tirelessly to expose this unseemly conspiracy against all KWAWTs and any other group so unfairly targeted and terrorized on our nation's phone lines. I may be in grave danger and have to go underground for awhile.

If anything ever happens to me, please call Clarice at 603-555-9876. I was given her number by mistake back in 2003 when attempting a call to Starbucks headquarters to complete some research I was doing for a show premise. Turns out, many people are given her number by "mistake" and we talked for hours and hours about the serious implications of this fact.

She is currently building a database of mis-directed callers and is conducting research of her own on this evil phenomena, which she hopes to publish in support of my campaign.

If you've been affected by the despicable practices of the 411 Crap Shoot Disservice, please feel free to share your stories.

Together, we can change the world!

Online Popstar...When You Wish To BE A Star!: OnlinePopstar Seeks Judges!

Online Popstar...When You Wish To BE A Star!: OnlinePopstar Seeks Judges!

Still looking to add more fabulous industry members to our fantastic panel!

Onlinepopstar.com, the world's ONLY international online karaoke contest website, is looking for judges for the online talent contest.

As a judge, you will be added to the OnlinePopstar Judges Panel and receive your own Judges bio page, complete with your bio, pictures, music, and advertising links.

Please visit the OnlinePopstar Judges link for an example: http://onlinepopstar.com/OurJudges.htm

OnlinePopstar.com receives over 70,000 hits/day and has seen 500% growth in each month since it's launch in January, 2006. This is a great opportunity for anyone in the music industry, music education, or entertainment business to help aspiring artists reach their goals as well as to promote themselves and their services and/or products to a targeted audience of singers and music industry professionals.

OnlinePopstar judges are also given the option to have their own forum in the members-only CyberStars forum. CyberStars is a rapidly-growing social networking community of karaoke lovers, singers, and fans. Here, you will also receive your own web page. You can post your articles, tips and advice here for our members and become known as an expert in your field.

DETAILS: As an OnlinePopstar judge, you will be required to spend approximately one hour per month scoring song submissions. You will be scoring only the top 5 singers each month. The scoring rubric is simple and is based on a 1-5 point scale on six different talent criteria. Your individual scores are never revealed to the contestants, just their collective scores from all judges are given. You are not expected to reveal your scores on any individual and are not expected to enter into any conversation with any contestants outside of the site.

Each OnlinePopstar judge hosts one edition of Inside The Singer's Studio, a live chat session on the site that allows the site members to chat live, ask questions and seek general advice.

REQUIREMENTS: OnlinePopstar is an industry leader in talent and our Judges Panel aims to be prestigious. To be chosen as an OnlinePopstar judge, you should work or have expertise in the music industry, have professional credentials or projects of merit that you have accomplished and have a great ear for vocal talent. You must be completely comfortable in scoring vocal competitors according to their level of talent; the contest is not a love-fest, we are looking for honest, accurate scoring from the judges panel.

Judge applicants will be asked to provide a brief bio/resume and references.

If you're interested in becoming an OnlinePopstar Judge, please send an email stating your interest, your bio details, references and a link to your website (if you have one.)

Become part of something GREAT!

New OP Judge - MusicGorilla.com!

With the addition of MusicGorilla.com, OnlinePopstar has added another amazing entertainment industry judge to the OP Judges Panel!

Music Gorilla is a complementary website that showcases aspiring artists to hundreds of music labels, A&R reps, and studios. With their solid contacts deep within the fields of entertainment and industry, Music Gorilla is able to guarantee their site members to be heard by the movers and shakers in "the biz" who can make an enormous impact on the careers of up and coming superstars!

Industry members are so impressed with MusicGorilla that they will fly out to listen to live MusicGorilla showcases and artist-member gigs!

The heart and soul of MusicGorilla are:
  • ALEXIA HELFAND
  • LAWRENCE ERLICHMAN
  • BETH MITCHELL
  • FRED BLACK

These fine folks are cutting-edge and passionate about what they do. The passion at MusicGorilla is to put aspiring artists directly in the line of fire; right in the center scope of music industry professionals who are looking to sign new acts, publish new music, produce music videos, and place new talent in tv, movies, and even video games!

Despite the recent deals that they have gotten for new artists such as: Milhouse, Ghost In The Machine, Kevin Schaeilling, Big Wolf Pappa, Shelley Laine, and Fell Boyzs, MusicGorilla takes NO cut in any deal!

That's right. As a MusicGorilla member, your deal is the one you strike with the Industry Members at MG. MusicGorilla claims no "finder's fee" for either it's Artist Members or it's Industry Members. It is simply the most innovative and ground-breaking opportunity for aspiring artists on the web!

Because they believe that the world's "next big deal" is going to be found in the wealth of unsigned talent on the web, MusicGorilla is extending it's expertise to the OnlinePopstar Worldwide Online Karaoke/Talent Contest.

As members of the OP Panel of Judges, MusicGorilla will apply the same intuitive insight into true talent that they do for the music industry. Each month, they will listen to the OnlinePopstar TOP 5 singers and score them on the basis of talent, voice, style, and overall entertainment value.

Additionally, MusicGorilla.com will sponsor one of the prizes to be won in the OnlinePopstar Grand Finals in October, 2007! In addition to the other cash and prizes, this season's OP Grand Finalist will also win a one-month FREE MusicGorilla membership! With this, the winner can submit their original song (another great OnlinePopstar Finals prize!) to MusicGorilla.com and be guaranteed that an Industry Member will listen to their submission!

As an added bonus, all OnlinePopstar Members can now enjoy a special 10% discount on membership at MusicGorilla.

The benefits of OnlinePopstar membership are growing by the day!

All-New CyberStars! It's stunning.

In March, 2007, we officially launched the brand-new OnlinePopstar members-only site, CyberStars!

The all-new CyberStars is an amazing, interactive social networking site (much like MySpace) where OP members can have their own web pages, complete with video uploads, their own mp3 players, and comments sections.
The great thing is, now that OnlinePopstars can easily interact together, the community is taking off!

Another cool thing is that it's so easy to share your web pages with anyone on the internet, because all OnlinePopstar members get their own URL! Check these out:

That's just a small example of what you can do with your very own web page at OnlinePopstar!

Other cool new features include:

  • Blogs

  • Photo Gallery

  • Member Ratings

  • Live Chat

  • IM

  • MP3 Players

  • Quizzes (take & create)

  • Polls (create & answer)

  • Events Calender

  • Guest Books

  • Friend Invites

  • Cool new forum

  • ...and more!

People really love the new CyberStars site and OnlinePopstar has welcomed over 900 new members just since it's launch on March 22!

With such a great early response, we're so excited for the future!

OnlinePopstar Launches PopstarKids Talent Search!

"School's out for summer!"

It's the jubilant war cry of kids everywhere that induces panic in the hearts of parents.

OnlinePopstar answers the call and is here with ready-made karaoke fun for kids of all ages!

With a leap of joy, we proudly announce the launch of PopstarKids at OnlinePopstar!

The PopstarKids section is now open and ready for your song submissions!

Any OnlinePopstar member with an All Access Pass can upload recordings of their children (ages 2-14) singing (or reciting a poem, etc.) and they'll be posted on the public site where anyone can go and listen! You can also upload a picture and a message to share with friends and family!

This is a great way for our members to share their love of karaoke and singing with their kids and also lets the kids have their own moment in the spotlight!

There is a message board on the PopstarKids page for family and friends to leave messages for our PopstarKids, too!

Kids who are so inclined are welcome to submit their songs (karaoke, a cappella, or originals) to the site and enter in the PopstarKids Contest!

Music is a wonderful creative outlet for people of all ages, children especially. Musically-involved kids are far less likely to become bored with free time on their hands as musical pursuits are completely creative and engaging!

Kids who pursue musical interests perform better in school and socially than those who don't and statistics show that children who pursue creative interests rarely encounter trouble with drugs, alcohol, and the law.

We hope that everyone takes advantage of the fun and excitement that is offered at PopstarKids and comes up with some great sounds to show off to the world!

We hope you all enjoy this new site feature!

OnlinePopstar has Ken Pearson and Inside The Singer's Studio!

Esteemed OnlinePopstar Judge and Bluesprings Music Owner, Mr. Ken Pearson, graciously invited all OnlinePopstar members to participate in a discussion with him on Monday, May 1st, at 9:00 pm (EST) at CyberStars Chat.

Mr. Pearson has been involved in the music business all his life, performing on stage at the Grand Ole Opry at the age of 13. In the 60’s he was opening for such recording artists as SAM THE SHAM, JERRY LEE LEWIS, SAM COOK, OTIS REDDING, and others. Ken Pearson has played on stage, and with such diverse artists as Charlie Daniels, 38 Special, Cheap Trick, Wet Willie, The Bellamy Brothers and others.

As such, he has keen insight into the inner-workings of the music industry and was kind enough to share his wisdom and knowlegde with OnlinePopstar members during the 90 minute live chat.

OnlinePopstar members were given the unique and wonderful opportunity to ask questions about the music business.

The questions he answered pertained to ageism in the music industry, writing your own music, the specifics of press kits, and artist promotion and representation. Many of his answers dispelled long-held beliefs and myths that people have about making it in "the biz."

OnlinePopstar hopes to offer "Inside The Singer's Studio" on a monthly basis as part of it's expanding list of perks and benefits of membership.

OnlinePopstar In The News!

OnlinePopstar is making waves in the karaoke community, and making headlines along the way!

The website has been the subject of a feature article in The Northwest Karaoke and Live Entertainment Guide, published by Bayview Publishing in Seattle, WA. An OnlinePopstar press release is also featured on the NW Karaoke website at http://www.nwkaraokeguide.net/.
Even more exciting than this very significant regional spotlight is the phone call OnlinePopstar received from NBC (WCAU) in Philadelphia. Patty Hartman of NBC-Universal contacted the offices of OnlinePopstar to discuss her interest in doing a feature story on OnlinePopstar.com and the advent of the relatively new phenomenon of people becoming famous online.

OnlinePopstar.com is a niche website in that we are the only online karaoke contest to offer participation to karaoke clubs and venues worldwide. Club winners will have their winning performances posted online to compete with other winners from around the globe! The contest culminates in a head-to-head contest between the online CyberStar and the ClubStar champion.

Another novel feature is that OnlinePopstar contest judges are entertainment industry professionals, who all work with stars in the music business.

OnlinePopstar is exquisitely pleased with this recent development and we're so excited about the attention our members will receive as a result of this news coverage. We are also looking forward to a huge upsurge in contestant applications for the online karaoke contest.

More news will be forthcoming as the air-date approaches.

Give Some Lovin' To The King...You Must Be An Elvis Fan

Besides talent, what does it take for a performer to achieve the iconoclastic status of Superstar? Some might say a great agent, while those with a little wisdom will tell you that it's all in who you know. While these assets might propel a performer in the right direction, the deciding factor of fame is in the fans. Moreover, the frenzy of the fans is what differentiates a "flash-in-the-pan" for a true Mega-Star.

Each Superstars fans are a breed unto themselves. Any seasoned DJ can tell you who a person idolizes just by sizing them up for a minute or two. I most certainly have noticed certain shared qualities in the fans of many different Stars. As the site administrator of OnlinePopstar.com, an online karoake site, I listen to karaoke versions of songs by these legendary artists performed by some of their most avid fans!

We have an online singer's forum called CyberStars where a lot of discussion takes place on favorite singers, music styles, and general chit-chat. From these discussions I have gleaned some very keen, and often humorous, insight.

Below, I will profile the fans of Tom Jones, Jimmy Buffet, Elton John, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, and Bon Jovi. These guys are some heavy hitters in the music industry and have some of the most faithful fans in the world.

Let me preface my profiles by stating the obvious; the fans are as wonderful and as distinct as the artists themselves and my generalizations may be just that: general.

However, my years in the karaoke industry have allowed me to meet a great many very passionate music fans. Like everyone else, I can spot an Elvis fan at 50 yards away; unlike everyone else, I can also easily pick a Van Morrison fan out in any crowd (he's usually not quite sober, of Irish or Scottish descent, wearing a scarf.)

I will attempt a profile with a twist; not only will I attempt to cite some commonalities in the fans of these singers, I will also add what I believe would be their beverages of choice!

Tom Jones fans are in their 60s and have steadfastly clung to their 1970s culture. No slaves to current fashion, the women have meticulous bouffant hairstyles, wear ornate displays of cosmetics, and cleavage-baring two-piece pant suits. The men still sport their jaunty sideburns and their gold-chain entangled chest hair is displayed by the open-front silk shirts they wear. These fans have all been divorced 2.8 times. They are rarely wealthy, but never poor. The money that they should spend on family therapy is instead spent in Vegas. Tom Jones fans can be spotted sipping Seagram's 7 & 7.

Jimmy Buffet fans are in their 40s and 50s. They were Hippy Wannabes in the 70s, they bought the Free Love concept but lacked the idealism then that they now display so fervently in their numerous humanitarian works. Usually enjoying life from the upper-economic status, these fans have taken a laid-back approach to life and have surprisingly few wrinkles. Most Buffet fans are college educated. Many have become teachers and professors as they need to have full enjoyment of their summer vacations. Collectively known as "Parrotheads," these hawaiian shirted, flip-flopping kids can most always be seen with Margaritas in both hands.

Elton John has a lot of gay fans. He has many more straight fans. Sir Elton fans defy any demographic for age as his musical genious has garnered love from people since the early 70s. The next generation of his fans are listening to him sing during their Disney movies. His most avid fans are all rich and famous, which is a good thing as your average person really can't afford his concert tickets. Elton John fans drink anything from Chardonnay to chocolate milk in sippy cups. Elton John fanatics do NOT drink; they are working a 12 Step program.

Billy Joel fans are the blue-collar working-class realists. In their 30s and 40s, his fans relate to his humble beginnings and, like him, they are tough on the outside with hearts of buttah. No matter what socio-economic status, Joel fans are all down-to-earth; it ain't pretty, but it's real. You can spot Billy Joel fans in a crowd wearing baggy pants,t-shirts, and baseball caps. If the crowd is devoid of Joel fans, it's because it's a beautiful boating day and they're all out on the water. Joel fans prefer Long Island Iced Tea.

Bruce Springsteen fans are the blue-collar working-class dreamers. Also in their 30s and 40s, Springsteen fans are idealists. They believe that dreams come true and, despite quiet inferiority complexes, tend to be tenacious in whatever they do. They very rarely divorce. Many are self-employed. Springsteen fans tend to be quiet loners until they gather at one of his frenzied concerts; this is when their collective pain-spattered idealism erupts into cataclysmic joy in the emotional abandon that is reflected from their hero. All Bruce Springsteen fans can be spotted wearing too-tight Levis with boots. The obvious choice of beverage is a Bud.

Bon Jovi fans are female. They are those 30-something girls who are stuck in the 80s; the crowning glory of their tanning booth tone is their Frost-N-Tip hair, teased out to glorious heights and secured with 16 ounces of Aqua-Net hairspray. Most of his fans smoke cigarettes and chew gum at the same time. Bon Jovi fans believe his lyrics and are modern-day Cinderellas, waiting for their Cowboy to ride in on his steel horse and rescue them from a never-ending adolescense. They tend to be overly-friendly touchy-feely type people; superficially nice, but never mean-spirited. A Bon Jovi fan will always try to get a guy to buy her a Fuzzy Navel.

There you have it. A concise fan profile of some very legendary artists. I have presented my thoughts and ideas as would any decent Billy Joel fan; I gotta tell it like it is!

If anyone reads this and wants to yell at me, come on over to CyberStars. I'm tough, I can take it. In any event, come visit me at OnlinePopstar.com for a rockin' good time!

Rock Star II - Audition Experience

Rock Star II - The Series is holding Auditions during the month of March for the next Rock Star to be aired the Summer of 2006 on CBS.

I attended the second audition at T.T. The Bear's in Boston as moral support for my own personal Rock Star, my main squeeze, my man.

The auditions were to go from 10:00-4:00 and so we planned to arrive just after noon. We got there around 1:00 and took our places at the end of the line.

Let me tell you, the Boston auditioners had to be the most driven, tenacious, and toughest people in the world to stand outside in frigid conditions with wind like knife blades for over 2 hours just for a 60 second chance for stardom!

After an hour and a half we were the next group of 10 to be let in! Oh joy, oh HEAT! To my utter horror, we were told that ONLY auditioners were allowed in the place, moral support people were not!

Thank God for the warm and cozy coffee shop across the street from TT's! It was here that another "moral support reject" and I jacked ourselves up on coffee for the next hour and a half waiting for our Stars to complete their auditions.

Here's the skinny on the audition process:
Be prepared to sing at least three songs, but never will you get the opportunity to do that. You will be given approximately 1 minute to do your thing. You can go a cappella (recommend this!) or bring your karoake disc, musical instrument, or an accompainist.
Once you get into the audition area, someone will take your picture with a digital camera, you'll be given an envelope with your contestant number on it, and you'll wait your turn...
Next, you'll be called...The producer will tell you to "Rock It!" and so you will.
Your audition will be videotaped, to be watched later by the producers. This fact may give you some solace when you realize that your audition isn't getting a lot of attention from the judges. (Some folks reported that the judges were walking in and out of the room, on the phone, doodling, fidgeting, and yawning!)

The day after the auditions is when the "powers that be" will give your audition tapes a LOOK-SEE. This is when they decide who will be called in for a "call-back" the next day. In Boston, I overheard one of the production managers talking with the owners of the coffee shop that they'd be back on Sunday, 03/05 from 12-4 doing auditions (the call-backs!)

My educated guess is that if you don't hear from anyone by, say, 11:30 p.m. on the day after your audition, you're probably not going to...but, hey, who am I to say? I'm just a moral support person.

So, we wait. ...tick tick tick tick tick...

Web promotion: O.J.T.-ing it!

Getting the word out about the new website is harder than I thought; actually, I didn't give it much thought.

I spent sooo much time and effort to learn to design the site, then spent hours building it, plotting it out, and tweaking it... There! "I built it and they will come," was my happy final thought.

HA! My simplistic approach was very soon to be revealed to me as a flight of blind ignorance. Since that time (3 long months ago) I have been diligently promoting OnlinePopstar, ever cautious of crossing the line from sharing information over to the "dark side" of spamming innocent people! What is okay for informational purposes on one site is heartily frowned upon elsewhere. No one has yelled at me yet, and I'm diplomatically charging ahead to get the word out that OnlinePopstar is alive and well and, well, an itsy bit lonely.

I mean, site visits have risen over 300% in the last 3 months; that's good, isn't it? I really wish that I knew for sure what to look for in regard to successful website growth. If anyone can tell me what constitutes average, above average, or (ack!) sluggish website progress, please do tell. You'll have a very eager and attentive listener in me!

So, I've found yet another outlet for shameless self-promotion. If you'd like to see my crafty little ads on AdPost.com, please click on the link below. If not to check out my ads, you really should see this site, anyhow. It's an amazing world-wide site where you can post FREE classified ads in myriad categories to bargain hunters everywhere.

First song uploads!

This is too cool!
The site has new members signing up everyday and (drumroll, please) the first song uploads are now on the site! Some of the other members have commented on the songs and other members have emailed me that they're going to be uploading their own songs any day now!
I'm psyched!
The CyberStars forum is such an awesome way for singers to showcase their talents and quite a thrill for them (and the other Members, too!) to have those songs on the site for the world to hear!
Karaoke-ing after 3 shots of tequila is one thing, but doing it stone-cold-sober and posting your songs live on the internet takes MUCHO DANUTZO!
Kudos to these brave and talented peeps!!

OnlinePopstar.com is live!

What started as a nifty idea exactly one year ago, has emerged from the mist of promise and is now a real, tangible, living breathing entity! The only thing I can equate this experience to is pregnancy and childbirth, oddly enough. Now, just like a mother with a newborn child, I am up all hours of the night nurturing my needy little creation and preparing it for life out on it's own; on the World Wide Web!

Check it out and tell me how cute you think it is: http://onlinepopstar.com

The idea to create a website that would sponsor a Worldwide karaoke competition was a fanciful one, to say the least. To allow users to post their songs on the website for the world to hear and allow members to VOTE for their favorite; well it just sounded too good to be true. The idea, grew, evolved and became! I was driven by a passion for karaoke, a secret crush on reality programming, and an insatiable need to do what has not been done before.

The fact that I then knew nothing about web design, codes, software, scripting, et al did not deter me. Just like when I was going to have my first baby and read a mountain of child development books, I scoured the web for all the info I would need to accomplish my dream! And, just as my poor first child has been a guinea pig, so it is with OnlinePopstar...

I'll just have to wait for some feedback and comments to come along to give me something to go on. But, so far, I really love it! We have members signing up everyday and the day that the first contest begins will be like every Christmas and Birthday party all lumped together!
